Meet the locals

Turtle-safe nights

Hatchlings find the Gulf by crawling toward the brightest horizon, the moonlight on the water. White light, even a phone screen, can pull them the wrong way. Sea turtles barely notice red light, so we say: go red after dark.

• Grab a red flashlight from the entry table and aim it at your feet
• No phone flashlights, headlamps or flash photos on the sand
• See a turtle? Lights off, stay back and stay quiet
• Close the blinds at dusk and switch off balcony lights
• Fill in holes, knock down sandcastles, and take chairs and toys in each evening

Happy shelling

• Sand dollars, scallops and colorful coquina shells
• Lightning whelks, olive shells, Florida cones and fighting conchs
• Sunray Venus and giant cockle shells for the keepsake jar
• Best finds come early in the morning and after a high tide or storm

Shelling tip: only take shells that are empty. If there’s a critter inside, gently set it back in the water.
